Shoreham travelled to Folkestone for the third stop on the 2013 CARA league calendar. After the disappointment of Eastbourne Regatta being cancelled on Saturday, the weather formed the main topic of conversation first thing in the morning. As huge waves pounded Sandgate beach, the men’s senior pairs were called off the water after trying to start while riding 10ft waves. Despite a general feeling of “Oh god do we have to go out on that” in the morning, the surf did provide a few comedy boating moments, serving to lift spirits (or in some cases drown them completely!). However after the very close to borderline conditions nearly forced a complete cessation in racing the wind let up and the regatta got underway. A much changed race order put more experienced crews onto the water in the still rough seas and held back the more junior crews while the water calmed.
Overall it was another good day for Shoreham in a season which is fast turning into one of the most successful for a very long time. Once again Shoreham’s ladies’ squad brought home most of the day’s wins and the Folkestone Ladies’ Aggregate trophy. The exception to the female winning streak was Tom and his fabulous effort against the wind to win Men’s Novice Sculls convincingly. Shoreham’s Senior Ladies made the most of the cooperating conditions, winning their four and pairs races and a beautiful row from Becca and Lizzie saw them take home their first Junior Pair win in style. A whole host of second and third-place finishes from other club members meant once again Shoreham finished second in the day’s Grand Aggregate and cemented their position at the top end of the CARA league so far!
