Shoreham junior in top 15 at NJIRC 2014

Shoreham junior Phoebe Mercer was the club’s first ever representative at the National Junior Indoor Rowing Championships, held last Friday at the Lea Valley Athletics Centre, North London. And in true Shoreham style she well and truly left her mark, coming a fantastic 12th out of 190 competitors in the Year 9 girls’ competition.

The NJIRC is the biggest indoor rowing event for juniors in the world and with almost 2,500 rowers at the event had the potential to be an overwhelming experience for a less-experienced competitor. However, Phoebe rose to the challenge to pull a personal best score – a whopping 1032m at an average split of 1:56.2/500m and at just 14 years old, Phoebe has real potential for a bright rowing career.

Phoebe – we’re very proud of your achievement…keep that training up! We’d also like to say a big thanks to Mandy Mercer and Tom Faith for their in-person support at the event, and for all club members who sent out a loud Shoreham cheer by the power of facebook.
