Sussex Indoor Mile 2014
22/02/2014 @ 10:00 am - 5:00 pm
Another year, another Sussex Indoor Mile, and Shoreham Rowing Club came home covered in glory with four victories including the two most prestigious of the event – the fastest man of the day and the fastest women of the day.
Shoreham’s rowers started well as Phoebe Mercer stormed home in the Year 9 girls’ event to win by a huge margin. With Portia Smith coming home just outside the medals in fourth place, and PBs for both Isobel Tugwell and Millie Blunt in the same event our youngest rowers performed exceptionally well. The Year 11 girls event was a very hard fought affair and Charlotte Rose couldn’t quite claw back into a medal spot finishing fourth after a shaky start. It was, however, a good performance in one of the closest races of the day, against girls with much more rowing experience. Roxanne Addison put in a great performance in the Year 12/13 girls’ event, taking second place and only missing out on the win by a matter of a few metres. Next time Rocky maybe don’t prep for the race with a week in Amsterdam?
Next up were the Shoreham Year 12/13 Boys James Tilley and Mark Swarbrick, who put in personal best performances, with Mark giving the rest of us a masterclass in how to execute a race plan as he stormed through the field in the last 500 metres to take second place.
So to Shoreham’s adults and we had a large contingent in attendance, with entries in; Mens Open, Mens lightweight, Mens, 30-40, Ladies Open, Ladies 30-40, and two Ladies lightweights.
First up was the Men’s Open event, with Mike and Toby flying the Shoreham flag. It was a solid performance from both of the boys, pulling PBs in a tough event and a strong finish from Mike saw him just miss out on a medal in fourth place. The Ladies Open followed swiftly on the heels of the mens – the result was pretty much determined in the first 20 strokes as Charlotte Pigg stormed away from the rest of the field to win the category and claim the fastest female time of the day at 05:50:2. It was quite simply an immense row. And the Ladies joy didn’t stop there; cracking rows from Sarah Bareham, Sally Hills and Charlie Allen saw them take 2nd, 3rd and 4th respectively in the same event. A clean sweep for Shoreham with Sarah B also taking home the trophy for fastest female lightweight.
The men’s 30-40 category up next was again going to be a hard fought affair, but a powerful row and strong finish from Shoreham’s Tom Faith saw him win not only the category ahead of Bexhill legend Mark Mitchell, but also claim the fastest time of the day with a stonking 05:10:4. Jim E pulled out a great PB to take the third place spot in the category.
And finally, in one of his first races for the club, Phil Powell had a solid row to beat his PB in the men’s 40+ competition.
Thanks to Bexhill RC for organising the event and a massive congratulations (and a small sigh of relief that it’s all over) to all Shoreham rowers who took part – some incredible racing, great PBs and even better cheering. Well done all!
