British Rowing Indoor Championships 2015

BRIC 2015
British Rowing Indoor Championships 2015

Shoreham were proud to send rowers to the British Rowing Indoor Championships (BRIC) 2015, held for the first time by British Rowing instead of previous hosts Concept2 it was located in the new Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park venue, the Lee Valley Velodrome. Alongside the Shoreham rowers we were also cheering on representatives from other CARA clubs – Bexhill, Deal, Dover and Southsea.

Whilst there were some teething problems and some less than brilliant organisational aspects…. registration was a disaster zone, all screens at the venue showed the same data meaning that while multiple races were running only info for one at a time could be seen, the results for races were not displayed at all after most events and the text on the screens was too small to read from most places in the arena… (rant over) we shall forgive British Rowing (as it was their first try) and declare it largely a success – though with some room for improvement.

Shoreham had a good day, and CARA in general put on a great show. Though many of our rowers thought they should have gone quicker, all had a great day out and we gained some excellent results for for the coast.

Early highlights were Charlotte Pigg’s Bronze medal (7mins 20secs) in the Womens 30-39 followed by a Bronze for Deal’s Tyler Amos in the U23 Men. Two bronze seemed like a good day’s work until the arrival of Southsea’s Jeff Watling, who took an amazing gold medal in the 65-69 Lightweight men’s category (7mins 21 secs). Though they were all eclipsed by Bexhill’s Mark Mitchell who smashed the British Record in his category pulling 6mins 20.5secs at the age of 40.

Alongside the some great CARA performances there were some impressive sights and massive scores from the the GB rowing squad, with an exhibition 2km relay from the men coming in at a crazy 5mins 16 secs, an our after finished their 2km open event and all finishing sub 6mins. Whilst our men all men drooled at the scores and dreamed of getting close to them, the women all drooled at the athletes and the thought of getting close to them…!
